Meet our friend Leigh, a resident volunteer who puts a face to so many BWW efforts that are transforming our community!
● We first met Leigh years ago, struggling to keep his overloaded bike trailer rolling. He was struggling with homelessness and a constant fear of losing his possessions. Helping our most vulnerable residents is a priority.
● Leigh’s volunteer record shows exactly what we hoped ReCycle would be, a string of earning hours and spending them on fixing up his bike. Volunteers can spend time instead of money in ReCycle, allowing everyone access to parts and supplies to maintain reliable transportation.
● Leigh also showed us some of the stresses that come from life on the street. After his bike was stolen, he returned to Bike Walk to Earn-a-Bike, which takes 15 volunteer hours. That’s a commitment that Leigh cheerfully took on, gaining a decent bike through his efforts. A bike one of you donated.
● Leigh recently got a job and an apartment, and rode his bike across town to work every evening. In late winter Leigh was hit by a car while riding. After recovering, he came to get a replacement wheel + helmet and we showed him our Bike/Ped Crash Data webpage, he’s one of the dots on the map. We are using Wichita Police Depart data to track Vehicle vs Bike/Pedestrian crashes to inform city staff + advocate for safety improvements.
● Finally Leigh shows why ReCycle is an Essential Service. Without BWW he most likely would not be able to manage the 5 mile walk to work, making keeping a job and housing difficult.
